The Old Pros Map & Guide To History

Old Pros, in partnership with the SexTech Lab at The New School, has created a digital, searchable, living archive of notable “old pros” or sex workers who have been left out of our history. We’ve created a comprehensive, accessible, and beautiful map that will continue to grow. This project is meant to ensure the preservation of stories of sex workers who have influenced and contributed to history.

Who The Map Is For

This resource is for sex workers who want to find examples of their own stories throughout history, academics, researchers, activists, tour guides, and storytellers who know that sex workers have always been important members of our communities.

This project started with the Old Pros archive, which includes past episodes of The Oldest Profession Podcast and examples highlighted in the The Oldest Profession live show.

We are now expanding this project to welcome submissions from researchers, advocates, and anyone with information about a “notable old pro” who should be included in this project.

What’s Included On The Map

We’re compiling a database of people, events, locations, myths and stories that are significant to history in some articulable way.

We would love to include stories of people, places, and events that are significant or noteworthy, good, bad, or momentous for some reason. We like firsts, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, performers, writers, artists, people who set precedents, early adopters, innovators, activists, and disruptors. We like to include events and locations significant to sex worker history such as the Church of St. Nazier in Lyon France where the protest that inspired International Whores’ Day started.

This project honors figures and events from the past. We are not currently including people who are alive and who are thus actively still contributing to our unfolding history today.

Submission Considerations

When completing your submission please keep in mind that we are building a map, so location is especially important. The more information you have about where, specifically, a person was born, or worked, or did something notable, the better.

Due to the volume of entries that we receive, we aren’t able to respond to all submissions. If we decide to move forward with your entry we’ll reach out with clarifying questions as needed. Submissions are reviewed by a panel composed of SexTech Lab members and Old Pros representatives on a biannual basis.
