In the Old Testament, Lilith was Adam’s first wife, made by God at the same time and from the same clay as Adam as his equal. When Lilith insisted on being on top during sex, both God and Adam scolded her, and she left the Garden of Eden. After, God created Eve from Adam’s rib, a smaller more dependent woman. Documentation first appears in the Sumerian epic “Inana and the Huluppu Tree,” written around 2900-2750 BCE.
