After a failed effort to deport sex workers from Nashville, Tennessee, the Union military ordered all sex workers to register and undergo weekly medical checkups in order to work legally. This was the United States’ first experiment in legalizing and regulating sex work. Earlier that year Major General William Rosecrans, had attempted to banish all sex workers from the city, rounding them up onto the USS Idahoe ship. However the women mutinied and brought the ship back to Nashville.
