Carol Leigh, also known as the Scarlot Harlot, coined the phrase “sex work” in response to speakers at the Women Against Violence in Pornography and Media refering to us as “prostituted women.” Carol Leigh went on to found the San Francisco Bay Area Sex Workers Film and Arts Festival and Bay Area Sex Worker Advocacy Network.
